Email About Magnetic Fields in Cars from a Reader

Email from reader:

Katie,

I’ve discovered that the reason I feel tired when driving was the magnetic fields in my car. It’s a 1994 model Chevy Suburban, with no fancy electronic stuff. All I know is its coming from where the cassette (yes, cassette) player is… was, b/c i pulled it out looking for the source so I could shield it. No luck there. No one can help.

Someone suggested I check the ignition coil. (It was over limit, over 100mG w/ Trifield.) Just another hint though, still no explanation on how to shield.

I contacted 25 or so shielding consultants … no one has the slightest clue on how to shield magnetic fields in a car, or even locate the source.

I replaced the suburban (just a couple years different. This time a 1997, same model.) Problem solved. Checking many other Suburbans from 1993 to 2002 revealed it was only two years, 1993 and 1994, that have the high magnetic fields. Is it a shielding defect? Involving the ignition coil? Or the dash wiring? Still have no answer.

The 1997 I just got is 2mG. I feel so much better. I suspect my EMF sensitivity was augmented by this car’s problem.

People who get sleepy or drained when driving should check their magnetic fields.

Thanks for all the work you do … a true inspiration.
